Mark Henry needs to go away. Not because he is not an asset to the WWE anymore. He has used a cheesy debut in 1996, and turned it into becoming a world heavyweight champion in the WWE and ECW, creating a Hall of Pain that made him one of the most feared heels in 2011. During this run, Henry was placed as a main event star, and proved himself accordingly. While injuries kept him from staying on the top of the list, he still had the capability to reinsert himself back into the championship scene, because the Hall of Pain meant something. He played a legit heel, and that has become an anomaly.
Unfortunately, over the past few years, WWE has decided that Mark Henry is better suited to be a jobber, putting over people over and making them look good. Again, as I have said before, it is not putting people over simply by losing to them. One has to enter whatever feud he is putting someone over in looking strong himself. Losing solely based on namesake has seldom worked in the history of pro wrestling. Ask Evan Bourne, Jack Swagger, John Morrison, Shelton Benjamin, or Fandango. All are great talent, but look what defeating Chris Jericho did for them.
There is no reason why Mark Henry should be an active member of the WWE roster. He has been a loyal employee for nearly twenty years, and is actually the longest active wrestler on the roster right now. Obviously, his loyalty does not mean much these days. When he shaved his head and returned, there was some anticipation that his career was going to be revived and he was going to be placed in the upper midcard at the very least. However, this anticipation almost rapidly ran dry when he was absolutely leveled by Brock Lesnar. This was such as wrong move to someone whose legacy was slowly decaying.
Now, it is even worse. So bad that he is the recipient of squash matches on Raw. Every single time I witness a Mark Henry match these days, a chunk of my heart fills with sorrow and disappointment. It is utterly ridiculous that, after all he has done for the company, he is being treated as a two-bit piece of nothing. And, no, he is NOT helping younger stars, and is NOT putting people over. Lateral at best.
His cringeworthy 2015 leaves no interest in watching him wrestle again. In fact, in regards to singles matches on Raw, he has won not one. NOT ONE!
In fact, here are his stats:
- 4/6 – L (Sheamus)
- 6/1 – L (Roman Reigns)
- 6/22 – L (Ryback)
- 6/29 – L (Big Show)
- 8/3 – L (Rusev)
- 8/10 – Draw (Rusev)
- 8/17 – L (Rusev)
- 9/21 – L (Sheamus)
- 9/28 – L (Big Show)
Need I say more?
To make a desperate attempt to salvage his near-twenty year tenure, and allow his career as a whole to be the resume for his hall of fame ballot instead of the past few years, Henry deserves a proper sendoff. My suggestion would be to commence a feud with Kevin Owens for the Intercontinental Championship at the beginning of 2016, possibly at the Royal Rumble as a result of Owens eliminating Mark Henry. This could allow Henry to seek retribution for weeks of Owens using this elimination to boost up his cockiness. After a proper build-up, Kevin Owens vs. Mark Henry for the IC title is booked for WrestleMania, and Henry completes the last verse of his swansong.
Anything but what we are witnessing right now. It would be best if he just went away from the wrestling scene for good, and keep any form of dignity he has from actually winning matches.
